"Every person is the main character of their own movie." This inspirational remark is what many people believe. And just like a movie can be fun, emotional, or boring, people also have the ability to dictate their life the way they want it to be. Despite what many people might say about life and fate, it should be acknowledged that the fate of every single person has always been in control of the one who lives the life. "Creators endorsed people with undeniable rights; among them are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." This is the epic quote of the Declaration of Independence of the United States in 1776. What it means is that Life has always been a thing that is given to all people. It is not the matter of whether or not people "desire" to be in control of their own lives, because they are indeed in control of their own lives from the very beginning. People live, love, and laugh, and things happen. Life might not go as how people want; they could end up at any level of the societal hierachy, even the worst, but the only one thing remains true: people always have control of what to do with their life, but they need someone to help them realize. People cannot say that some people end up the way they do because they do not desire to be the master of their own fate, because if they are not the master of their own decisions throughout the years of their life, then who is? Perhaps in their deep soul, there is always a will to stand up for their own life, but it is just that society could not find a way to inspire that. For an instance, homeless people live on the streets and ask for money to live through a few days. But there is always a home built by the government for them to be, or a job for them to do. Then why are they still on the street? What people could do, however, is to help them, to guide them to the right direction, slowly but surely, and eventually people will realize their desire of controlling their own fate. The world will appear more colorful to them. Really, people can be the master of their own fate, and the guidance of other fates. But yes, it is very unfortunate that many people are viewed as "pawns" in many, many schemes and plans. Look at the Vietnam War for example, half a million of young men died in a meaningless war with what seems to be a very vague goal from the start. People started to protest, to condemn the government for seeing the lives of the soldiers as worthless. They argued that no soldiers wanted to be in that filthy war. But was it really? Not everyone was a dove, there were also hawks too. A documentary series in 2017 called "The Vietnam War" published by PBS recalled the story of a young soldier who actually volunteered to join the Marines and travel across the globe to "kill the Reds." Was he a pawn in this case? No, it was his decision to be there, to serve for his country, to be a patriotic and heroic man America has every wanted. And that was definitely not a one-off case, because there were indeed a lot of young men who volunteered to join the army when the war just started. Maybe it is not true that no one wanted to be a pawn. Maybe becoming a pawn is actually how they desire to be the master of their fate. And then there were stories of heroic sacrifices whether or not the soldiers wanted to be in the war. There is a story of a solider named To Vinh Dien of the People's Army of Vietnam who used his body to stop an artillery from running down the hill during their resistance war against France. Now, he might or might not be a "pawn" in a conflict that should have never happened, but in a split second he had found himself how to be the master of his own fate: to sacrifice his short-span life for the nation to live for eternity. To live is way to control one's life, but to die is also a way to master one's fate. And again, people have always been control of their Life since birth, it is just the matter of what happens in the world that may influence how they live their life. Everyone is the director of their own movie. Not just a main character, but a director. Sometimes they act like what people expect from them like an actor, and sometimes they live in way they believe it should be. But either way, it is safe to say that people do not need to desire to be a master of their fate, because they are the master of their own fate from the start of the reel.
